Monthly Events

Tot Shabbat at Kol Ami - Tot Shabbat is a program for young children, infants to 4 years of age and their parents. The program will take place on the first Saturday morning of the month at Kol Ami. Beginning at 10:00am and running for one hour, the class will focus on the joy of Shabbat through music, movement and stories. The underlying intent of the program is to introduce Judaism to young children and help to develop a comfort in the synagogue. There will be a simple snack served, an arts and crafts project and opportunity for parents to meet and socialize. All members of Kol Ami, neighboring synagogues and unaffiliated families are invited.

Rosh Chodesh group for women - Rosh Chodesh is a biblical holiday that sanctifies the appearance of the first sliver of moon each month, symbolizing renewal and the cycle of life. Since the Middle Ages, it has been set apart as a holiday particularly important to women. Rosh Chodesh offers a varied forum for prayer, study and discussion of issues of particular concern to women.

This will be for families with children 6 years old and under and will begin at 10am.

Saturday, December 10 and Sunday, December 11: Artist-in-Residence program with Gerard Edery (vocals/guitar), and his ensemble including Meg Okura(violin/erhu/vocals), and Daniel Ori (upright bass). The group will present “Treasures of Sephardic Song” in Cheshire as part of an artist-in-residence weekend sponsored by Kol Ami, Temple Beth David and the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven. The event begins with public concert on Saturday, December 10 at 8 p.m. at Nelson Hall at Elim Park, 140 Cook Hill Road in Cheshire. Kol Ami has reserved 50 free tickets on a first-come, first-served basis just for Kol Ami members. Public prices are $15 for the concert and can be booked at www.nelsonhallelimpark.com.

Children in both Kol Ami's and Temple Beth David's religious schools will gather on Sunday morning, December 11, at Doolittle School in Cheshire for a full morning's workshop with the ensemble. Finally, a Lunch and Learn for adults will follow Sunday at 1 pm at Kol Ami. This event is free to KA members but you must RSVP (contact info above) by Tuesday, December 6.

Gerard is recognized as a leading musical folklorist and a master singer and guitarist, as well as a composer. He has at his command a remarkable range of ethnic folk styles and traditions from around the world, sings in fifteen languages and speaks four fluently. Not only does Gerard regularly uncover and preserve songs from Europe, the Middle East, South America and ancient Persia, he energizes these repertoires by interpreting them for contemporary audiences and by teaming up with some of the world's most highly acclaimed virtuoso musicians. His special brand of world music fusion prizes formal authenticity and an appreciation for how disparate cultures overlap, parallel each other and often borrow from one another. He is particularly known in the Jewish community for his command of Sephardic -- Judeo-Spanish -- music from the middle ages to contemporary times. BABYSITTING

Babysitting is available on both mornings of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur for our youngest members (6 and under please). Sitters will be available for the entire morning service.

PARKING

all parking will be on site for all of the High Holiday Services. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE FRONT SPACES unless you have the need. Please follow the signs to the parking at the rear of the complex (same space we utilized last year).
FOOD DRIVE

We are donating to the Cheshire Food Pantry. All food donations are welcome. The pantry is especially low on cereal, canned/jarred fruits, snacks (think school snacks for kids), coffee/tea and toiletries. There are boxes at the Temple for your donations. We are running the food drive for three weeks, ending on October 16th.
You may drop off your donation either on Erev Rosh Hashanah, in between the holidays, Kol Nidre evening or other non-Shabbat/holiday times. If you have any questions, please feel free to email rosespielman@sbcglobal.net.

FOOD DRIVE

We are donating to the Cheshire Food Pantry. All food donations are welcome. The pantry is especially low on cereal, canned/jarred fruits, snacks (think school snacks for kids), coffee/tea and toiletries. There are boxes at the Temple for your donations. We are running the food drive for three weeks, ending on October 16th.
You may drop off your donation either on Erev Rosh Hashanah, in between the holidays, Kol Nidre evening or other non-Shabbat/holiday times. If you have any questions, please feel free to email rosespielman@sbcglobal.net.

We will be learning some special Megillat Esther troupe, study some parts of Ruth together, and eat some amazing Blintz soufflé prepared by our President, Gerry Ganezer. Kol Ami Men's Club

Kol Ami Men's Club was established in April of 2009. Our members gather together for fellowship, recreation, and religious and personal growth while helping to support the social, educational, cultural and spiritual services.

In 2010 we have had a lot of fun and have been able to help the synagogue do quite a few things.

We have had Golf Tournaments, Poker Tournaments, Fantasy Football Leagues, NFL Playoff parties at Kol Ami and many more activities. In the Fall, the Kol Ami Softball Team participated in the Inaugural JCC Fall Baseball Wood Bat League and finished 2nd overall. This was the first Kol Ami sports team to finish with a winning record in anything in history!!! While the Spring Team did not fare as well, the team was still quite competitive and had a great deal of fun.
The 2nd annual Kol Ami Fantasy Football League was dominated from start to finish by Ron Peck. The novice “general manager” used his incredible football knowledge to win both the regular season and playoffs!

Recently, members of the Men’s Club built bookcases for the new Kol Ami Library. The bookcases were generously donated to Kol Ami by Max Kosover's employer. Special thanks to Max, Craig Goldstein, Dan Swartz, Alex Tsekhansky and Mark Korman.

Beginning at 10:00am and running for one hour, the class will focus on the joy of Shabbat through music, movement and stories. The underlying intent of the program is to introduce Judaism to young children and help to develop a comfort in the synagogue. There will be a simple snack served, an arts and crafts project and opportunity for parents to meet and socialize. Rosh Chodesh group for women - Rosh Chodesh is a biblical holiday that sanctifies the appearance of the first sliver of moon each month, symbolizing renewal and the cycle of life. Federation Director Sydney Perry has generously invited our Rosh Chodesh group to take part in a special afternoon workshop with the internationally known Rabbi Shefa Gold, "Devotional Healing: Opening our Hearts in Challenging Times" before the event from 1-4 p.m. Sydney is asking our group to participate AT NO COST since we would cancel our regularly scheduled Rosh Chodesh gathering, which we were supposed to have at 4 p.m. because of the Super Bowl. Our host, Leslie McPadden, has graciously agreed that we should take advantage of this generous offer instead of having a Cheshire celebration this month. Please let Cantor Dorothy Goldberg know ASAP if you are planning to participate in the Shefa Gold workshop, so that we can notify Sydney Perry.

Community Projects

Update 8/19/2011

I just returned from a trip to Waterbury. First, I dropped of a large bag of vegetables at a Soup Kitchen. This donation comes from the Boulder Knoll Farm, which gives Tikum Olam vegetables every week to donate. It was lunch time, and there were lots of people eating there.

Then, I went to the Waterbury Food Bank and dropped off cucumbers and zuccinis. All summer, we have been dropping off cucumbers and zucchinis that Kol Ami members planted and grew themselves. Low income folks often do not have access to fresh, healthy vegetables, as they are usually expensive and don't keep for very long. Canned and processed foods tend to be much higher in fat, sugar, and salt content, and are strong contributors to obesity. The summertime is an especially vulnerable time for low-income children, as they are not getting their free school lunch at school, which is sometimes the only full meal eaten.

The women in charge at the food bank said, "Thank you. Kol Ami is the only group consistently donating vegetables. This is much appreciated!."

THIS SUMMER , we (Kol Ami members, from our own gardens) have donated 145 pounds of fresh vegetables to the Waterbury Food Bank and 40 pounds of cucumbers and zucchini to other food banks, for a TOTAL of 185 POUNDS-SO FAR! This total does not include our weekly donations to the Soup Kitchens for the Boulder Knoll Farm.

Hey folks. We need your help on some projects. It is our hope that every family in our congregation will pick at least one of these projects and become part of it. We will also be approaching people individually if we don't hear from you. Please email me at rosespielman@sbcgloblal.net which project appeals to you.

The projects are: Relay for Life, Gardening to Feed the Poor, and Fresh Air Fund.

Here is a brief description of each project:

Gardening to Feed the Poor: Our congregation has been approached by the leader and founder of Harvest Now. The man in charge, Brooks Sumberg, has a goal of growing several thousands pounds of food, which will be donated to food banks. Last year, he helped get 2000 pounds of food donated to food banks. The idea is that everyone sets aside a few rows in their gardens. We all plant the same vegetable or fruit, and we plant it at the same time. Your family then helps you grow it (water it, etc.) and we all harvest our crop at the same time, and then donate it to the food bank. Brooks is knowledgeable about growing/harvesting and can advise us as needed. We hope to get at least 10 families. Who can help garden and donate vegetables?

Fresh Air Fund: last year our family, as well as another congregant family, were part of the Fresh Air Fund. The Fresh Air Fund matches VERY low income New York City children with host families across the Northeast and Canada. We were matched with Andrea, an 8 year old little Mexican-American girl who lives in a tiny apartment in Queens. She came and stayed with us for a week and walked barefoot outside, picked blueberries, and swam in a lake, all for the first time in her life. We are inviting her back again this year. It was not easy adding a third child to our household/family for a week. It was incredibly rewarding and also helped our kids appreciate how much they truly have. You do not need a big house to do this (ours isn't). Who can help enrich a child's life?

American Cancer Society Relay For Life: This one we (the Tikum Olam committee) have literally spent hours discussing and problem solving. Here's the deal: We as a congregation reserved/did not schedule anything for the first weekend in June, so we could participate in Relay. However, due to a beautiful Native American sport called lacrosse and a lacrosse tournament, Relay for Life was moved to the second weekend in June. This conflicts with a Bar Mitvah of one of our members. We are not large enough to hold/sponsor two events at the same time. We, as a committee examined many possible options/solutions. The plan we came up with is the best and most feasible plan. This is what we are doing: We are going to raise money on-line through Cheshire Relay for Life and also through in-person donations. We are then going to have a celebratory day handing in all our fundraising (lunch, tie dying t-shirts, games) and RUNNING/WALKING our own Kol Ami 5K fun run, as well as a 1k kids jog. These events can also further raise money for American Cancer Society. We have chosen Sunday June 26th for our big fiesta. We would love as many people as possible to come join us, and possibly run or walk the 5k. Even if you can’t join us, every year we try to raise money for the American Cancer Society, and that would be great if you could help out. Who can join us and who can help raise money to fight cancer?

Federation Director Sydney Perry has generously invited our Rosh Chodesh group to take part in a special afternoon workshop with the internationally known Rabbi Shefa Gold, "Devotional Healing: Opening our Hearts in Challenging Times" before the event from 1-4 p.m. Sydney is asking our group to participate AT NO COST since we would cancel our regularly scheduled Rosh Chodesh gathering, which we were supposed to have at 4 p.m. because of the Super Bowl. Our host, Leslie McPadden, has graciously agreed that we should take advantage of this generous offer instead of having a Cheshire celebration this month. Please let Cantor Dorothy Goldberg know ASAP if you are planning to participate in the Shefa Gold workshop, so that we can notify Sydney Perry.

Passover Candy Sale

Dear parents,

This Sunday, your children will be coming home with a Passover Candy Sale packet!! I know how excited you all are....it is going to be really a great fundraiser for our school. We all love Bartons Passover Candy!!!

Please take a little time to sell (help your kids I mean) the candy. There is also an online option for your out-of-town friends and family, and a code will provided with the packet. The sale will start Sunday February 6th, and end Sunday March 13th.

There will be easy instructions with the all of the information you will need as well.

We finally got a beautiful bookcase and four bookshelves, where we can put Kol Ami library. The bookcase was generously donated to Kol Ami by Max Kosover's employer.

Dear Parents,

Today in school we had a series of special events relating to “Sham al ha mita” or the Shma that is recited at bedtime. Thanks to Audrey and Kimmi Grove, Susan Peck and Stacy Unsworth for creating and running the pillowcase activity. Many thanks also to the parents who stayed to help with the program. If your family does not recite Shma at bedtime, this would be a good opportunity to follow up on our instruction and begin to!

You will find a beautiful introduction to the prayer in the Siddur Sim Shalom on page 245. In short, the prayer aspires to lie down in peace, have pleasant dreams and awaken appreciating the beauty of the morning light. Saying the Shma with your children just prior to “lights out” can be a meaningful and loving moment to end the day. We hope you will take advantage of this teachable moment at home!

Coat Drive update

Congrats! Our congregation, with help from the wider Cheshire Community (including town employes and a Boy Scout troop) donated over 200 coats! Many of the coats have already been distributed. The coats are distributed through non-profit agencies throughout the state, helping to ensure that the neediest people receive the coats and that no coats are sold for profit. We donated sizes ranging from infants to men's xxlarge. Kuddos to all who helped and donated!

Now a request. I hope people can help. Abraham's tent is a program between the faith communities of greater New Haven and Columbus House. Columbus House provides shelter, employment services and support services to men and women struggling with homelessness. Columbus House runs shelters, transitional housing, permanent supportive housing, as well as programs to help people continue their path out of homelessness. During winter, the shelters' 155 beds for the homeless men are filled to capacity and men are often turned away, back into the freezing temperatures. So, last year Columbus House asked communities of faith to volunteer to take up to 10 men for a week. The men chosen are screened by Columbus House and sleep in Churches and Temples who have volunteered. The men stay at the church or Temple from 6 Pm until 6 Am, and then are back out on the streets, trying to find jobs or getting counseling. For the second year in a row, Tim's church in New Haven has volunteered to take 10 men for a week. Cots are provided for the men. Kol Ami has been asked to take one night-January 22nd. We have been asked to provide 3 chaperones at the church. Tim did it last year, and the church social hall is nicely designed so that the chaperones can go into their own room. Tim said the men were tired and went to sleep quickly. Many of the men lack support systems, lost their jobs in the bad economy, and did not have friends or family they could turn to. Some of the men are veterans.

So, what we need is 3 volunteers (Tim will also be there) to spend ONE night at Tim's church, allowing men a warm place to sleep so that they do not freeze to death.

Israeli Trip Information and Itinerary

Dear Fellow Israel Travelers;

I am thrilled to attach the completed itinerary for our trip to Israel departing Sunday August 7 and returning Friday August 19, 2011. Of course, there is still time to make modifications to our plans, but I hope you will agree that your input has been included.

We will be partnering with Oranim Educational Tours in Israel . In addition to the itinerary, their operating policies are included.

Currently, 26 people have expressed strong interest in our trip. We are flying with El Al and with their generous policies we are holding 32 seats. Based on current fuel surcharges (barrel price $90), the per person ticket price is $1465. The total trip cost is $3750. In order to hold your place we will need a deposit of $250 per person*. We will meet to collect deposits and answer any other questions at Kol Ami on Tuesday, January 4 at 7:00 pm. A payment of $1750 per person will be due April 1. The balance of $1750 per person is due May 1.

We have received queries about the trip from some Christian friends. Please let people know that while we observe Shabbat, they will have the opportunity to visit Christian holy sites in Jerusalem at a nominal additional cost.

Finally, as above, to allow more people to join our trip, we have been able to hold a limited number of extra seats than our current registrations indicate. First come, first served! Tell your friends and neighbors!

Chevrah Kadishah

We will be having a training session for out new Chevrah Kadishah -- Sacred Fellowship -- to perform the mitzvah of taharah (purification) for those in our community who have died. The session is both men and women at 1 p.m. at Alderson Funeral Home, 615 South Main Street. The Cheshire Fire Department is lending us the use of a life-size dummy so that men and women can train together. Representatives from the Meriden Chevrah Kadishah will also be on hand to help train our new group. There is no obligation for you to commit to being on the Chevrah Kadishah, but this is a good way to decide whether you are interested. Kol Ami Sisterhood Goes to Baltimore Convention

Kol Ami Sisterhood was well represented at the International Convention of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism at the Marriott Waterfront Hotel in Baltimore, MD Dec. 12-15, 2010. Gerry Ganezer, Ethel Marcus and Eve Gold were delegates to the 800 strong Convention whose theme was “Kehillah Kedoshah-Celebrating Community Woman to Woman”.

During the 4 days, we discussed Conservative Judaism in Israel, otherwise known as Masorti Judaism; learned about books from authors-Meredith Levin Jacobs (The Modern Jewish Mom’s Guide to Shabbat: Connect and Celebrate-Bring Your Family Together with a Friday Night Meal); Author Jennifer Gilmore (Something Red) and Tina Wasserman (Entre to Judaism).

We listened to Dr. Arnie Eisen, Chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary who spoke about who we are and where we are going as Jews today and tomorrow; and attended many meetings with our counterparts around North America and Israel. We also heard Rabbi Bradley Shavit Artson, Dean of the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, California, speak on “What the World Needs Now: Judaism’s Contribution and Ours”.

Workshops were given about Shared Interests and Life Cycle Stages: Creating Communities in our Congregations; Talking to God- How we make prayer come alive for those who are lost, bored and feel unmoved in synagogue; Sharing dreams; The Environment; Turning Adversity into Opportunities-The Jewish Community’s Response to Breast Cancer, and many other interesting topics. We participated in daily Shacharit and other religious services, completely conducted by our Women’s League women.

We were pleased that our own Ethel Marcus, a member of the Women’s League Creative Judaic Arts Council, conducted a workshop. She showed women how to beautify their Shabbat tables by creating a fabric tile challah cover.

New International Officers for 2011-2013 were installed. We will explore a marvelous program we experienced called “Vashti’s Banquet”. Fifty vendors from all over the world exhibited and sold their merchandise in a massive Exhibition Hall throughout the Convention. It was a marvelous experience, one in which we have learned a lot, bonded with Jewish women from around the world, and came back revitalized and reinvigorated.

TORAH CHANTING: Over a thousand years ago a group of scholars called the Masorites, invented the musical system of cantillation called troupe. The symbols are the same whether it is for reading Torah or chanting Haftorah, the Megilot, or for the High Holidays. Once you understand how the system operates, then you will be able to apply your knowledge to mastering either Torah or Haftorah.

Beginning at 10:00am and running for one hour, the class will focus on the joy of Shabbat through music, movement and stories. The underlying intent of the program is to introduce Judaism to young children and help to develop a comfort in the synagogue. There will be a simple snack served, an arts and crafts project and opportunity for parents to meet and socialize. All members of Kol Ami, neighboring synagogues and unaffiliated families are invited.

Friday, December 10 (3 Tevet 5771) - Oneg Shabat. 8:00 pm, adults only. Led by Cantor Goldberg, the evening will feature a musical (both Hebrew and English) celebration of Shabbat with plenty of social time.

* Adult Oneg Shabbat, “Rejoicing in Shabbat,” is based on the “Shabbat Tisch” or Shabbat Table, where friends and family gather on Shabbat to sing and enjoy fellowship and food. After singing several Kabbalat Shabbat songs and offering the opportunity to say kaddish for those observing Yartzheit, participants will enjoy dessert and drinks and sing along with a variety of songs in Hebrew and English.

Desserts that are pareve contain no milk products and are labeled "Pareve". All the major grocery stores sell cakes and cookies so labeled. Please do not bring food product prepared at home or prepared in store (for example, fruit cut in the store).

Also, feel free to bring any wine you wish to drink! Though not all wine is "hechshered" (produced under rabbinic supervision) all wine is kosher. At Kol Ami we use "hechshered" wine for ritual purposes.

Kol Ami is pleased to announce the start of a computer repair/upgrade service. Board Member Max Kosover has agreed to diagnose and repair/upgrade your home computer equipment. Max is quite proficient in this work and will donate his time in this service to Kol Ami.

Here's how it works:

Contact Max and arrange to have him look at your equipment. He will diagnose the problem and suggest the repairs that should be made and estimate the costs of this work.
You can at that point agree to the repairs, pay for hardware and software and Max will fix your equipment.
Max's time will be billed as follows;
$72 for the first 3 hours, $18 per hour for each additional hour
If Max cannot repair your equipment, the charge will be $36 for all time used up to that point.
Max will donate all labor charges to the synagogue.

As most retail computer repair services charge upwards of $150 per hour just to diagnose computer problems, this program promises to be another example of the Kol Ami "win-win-win" strategy that has proven successful in other efforts. You win, Max wins and Kol Ami wins.

Rosh Chodesh group

Dear Friends –

Kol Ami's monthly Rosh Chodesh (new moon) group for women in the Cheshire area, on Sunday, January 9 at 7 p.m., will explore Jewish aspects of environmentalism during our upcoming celebration of the Hebrew month of Shevat. Shevat is when the traditional “New Year of Trees” is observed, a time for reflection on our relationship to our environment. Eve Gold will report on new conservation initiatives from the recent Women's League of Conservative Judaism Convention in Washington and Abbi Bruce and I will discuss Tu B'Shvat and biblical passages on protecting the environment. This session, which is free and open to the public, will take place at a the home of Abbi Bruce at 85 Quarry Village Road in Cheshire. Refreshments will be served.

Rosh Chodesh is a biblical holiday that sanctifies the appearance of the first sliver of moon each month, symbolizing renewal and the cycle of life. Since the Middle Ages, it has been set apart as a holiday particularly important to women. Rosh Chodesh offers a varied forum for prayer, study and discussion of issues of particular concern to women.

Wednesday, November 24 - Kol Ami will be participating in this year's Cheshire Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, which takes place this Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 205 Academy Road. We encourage you to come along and enjoy the service. For those who enjoy singing, there will be an ad hoc interfaith choir which meets at the church right before the service to rehearse at 6:30 p.m. The choral pieces will be simple and in English, and a short rehearsal should be sufficient.

Friday, November 26 (Day after Thanksgiving) - Oneg Shabbat at 8 pm (instead of our traditional 7:30 service)

A musical and social celebration of Shabbat - Bring a pareve (no dairy, no lard!) dessert and your favorite wine or other beverage, a warm heart and welcoming spirit. Plan to relax and share the special flavor that is the essence of the Sabbath.

This is an Adult Only event. If you need babysitting, our Youth Group is providing. Please reply to this email and I will put you in touch with one of our youth group members.
