Relay for Life
It is time to sign up for Relay again. Relay is an amazing experience and is appropriate for all ages. Cancer has impacted almost all of us, on a deep personal level. Relay is a way to "Remember, Celebrate, and Fight Back" against cancer. During this special type of walkathon, we will be celebrating Shabbat, eating and walking together, raising money, and supporting our members of our community. So, if you haven't yet signed up, please sign up to Relay. Contact Tracy Carim and Rose Spielman for forms and information.

Shavuot Schedule:

Tuesday evening, May 18. For the first time, beginning at 8:00 pm. Kol Ami will host an evening of adult learning called a “Tikun L’eil Shavuot”. The topic will be an in-depth analysis of the Book of Ruth, which is read during services. The evening of study will be led by Rabbi Andrew Hechtman and members of the congregation who learn together each Sabbath morning. The learning is free and open to the community. Please let us know if you plan to attend.

Blintz Dinner

Wednesday, May 19, there will be a blintz dinner beginning at 5:30 and an evening service follows at 7:00 pm. It is traditional for Jews to eat dairy on Shavuot. Some say it harks back to King Solomon's portrayal of the Torah as "honey and milk under your tongue" in the Song of Songs. At Kol Ami, the tradition is for the children of the Hebrew school to have a blintz-rolling party the Sunday before! PLEASE SEE FLYER FOR DETAILS.

Shavuot celebration concludes with morning services including Yizkor, Thursday May 20. To make it easier for people to get to work the service will begin at 8:30 am and is followed by a breakfast. All are welcome!

Reminder, our next Friday evening Shabbat Service will be on May 21 at 7:30 pm.

June 11/12 – Shabbat Services will be at the Relay for Life at Cheshire High

Beginning at 10:00am and running for one hour, the class will focus on the joy of Shabbat through music, movement and stories. The underlying intent of the program is to introduce Judaism to young children and help to develop a comfort in the synagogue. There will be a simple snack served, an arts and crafts project and opportunity for parents to meet and socialize. All members of Kol Ami, neighboring synagogues and unaffiliated families are invited.

Please join us for our next fun filled TOT SHABBAT.

If You Have Financial Needs - This is a time when many people have financial needs, because of the recession, the season, unexpected costs relating to the economy and other reasons. There are funds available through the New Haven Federation and other sources that can be accessed for this purpose. I can help steer people to these resources. Please do not hesitate to contact Rabbi Hechtman or me if you wish to pursue this. We will speak confidentially. If there are other people in the community that you are concerned about, please also encourage them to be in touch with me. - Howard
